Title
of project: Lifelong citizenship education, immigration
and social cohesion: Examining civic change among Latin Americans in Canada.
Summary: The objective of this project is to explore the ways in which
immigrants from Latin America, whether presently Canadian citizens or not, become
involved in civic and political activities in Canada, and the challenges and
issues that are raised during their transition to living in a new country. Two
hundred individuals (100 from Toronto and 100 from Montreal) will participate
in the study. A particular focus of the study is the learning dimension of civic
engagement, and its implications for citizenship education. The study is part
of a larger research project on citizenship learning life histories.
